HALIFAX, NS – Today is International Day of Peace and all around the world people and organizations are celebrating what peace means to them. The theme this year is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.” The YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth is sharing that message today as we encourage members of our community to nominate youth, adults and groups/organizations for YMCA Peace Medals, which will be awarded in November during YMCA Peace Week.
“More than the absence of violence and conflict, peace is the ongoing work of building and maintaining conditions of fairness, inclusion, empathy, security, and respect for diversity,” says Brian Posavad, President and CEO, at the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth. “Every year we award YMCA Peace Medals to individuals and groups who, without any special resources, demonstrate a commitment to peace through contributions made within their local, national or global community.”
2017 marks the 30th anniversary of YMCA Peace Medals being awarded across Canada. Previous local winners of this award have included the Northern Lights Lantern Festival, Druk Atlantic Youth Society, Dr. Joni Guptill from Doctors Without Borders, Peace in the Classroom author Hetty Adams, The Raging Grannies, Dennis Adams from Leave Out Violence, and The Metro Food Bank.
“The idea of trying to attain world peace can feel overwhelming simply because it’s such a large-scale goal,” says Posavad. “But if you look at ways to contribute to peace in your own home and community and gradually work up to bigger national and international issues, it becomes manageable and attainable. Our goal is to demonstrate that together we can make a difference in creating peaceful communities.”
This year the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth will be awarding Peace Medals in three different categories: Youth, Adult and Group/Organization. The deadline for nominations is October 20, 2017.
