HALIFAX, NS – April 24, 2017 – The governments of Canada and Nova Scotia announced their support of $5 million each for the John W. Lindsay YMCA facility today. This funding, provided through the New Building Canada Fund, is a strategic investment in recreational infrastructure in the Halifax region that will support a stronger, healthier community.

“The collective investment in the future of our community represented here today is a testimony to the strength of our resolve to make our community better for all for decades to come,” says John Lindsay Jr., Chair of the YMCA Capital Campaign. “It shows the importance our partners have placed on the health and wellness of our community, and everyone in it.”

The John W. Lindsay YMCA, named in memory of long-time supporter and member John Lindsay Sr., will be a 70,000 square foot facility that features an aquatic centre, a gymnasium, an indoor track, strength conditioning and weight program spaces, a Family Development Centre, and community spaces. The facility will be part of a new mixed-use development being built by Southwest Properties on the corners of South Park and Sackville Streets in Halifax.

“Our vision is for the new John W. Lindsay YMCA to be a place that, like the wider YMCA organization, is open and welcoming to all,” says Brian Jessop, the outgoing chair of the YMCA Board of Directors. “Together we are ensuring, through this project, that everyone in our community will be able to access the tools and supports they need to better themselves, participate in community, and engage in a supportive network that will have a profound impact on their lives.”

As a charity, the YMCA ensures that its facilities and programs are accessible to all by providing subsidies to those in need so that everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential. This new facility is scheduled to open in early 2019.
