What sets us apart at the YMCA

While many know the YMCA as a gym, our history and ongoing mission as a charity sets us apart from the many fitness facility offerings around town. Even more so, our Volunteer led Fitness Classes showcase how leaders in our membership show up and truly embody our mission of Building Healthy Communities.

From Aquafit classes in the new pool at the John W. Lindsay YMCA, to Forever Fit programs taking place at 7+ locations across HRM, volunteers pave the way to fitness at the Y, and have been doing so for many years. “I’ve been volunteering with the YMCA since 1987” says Aquafit Instructor and YMCA Volunteer, Hugh Gillis. “I was a member; I was going to classes and there was an instructor at the time who said he thought I would be a good instructor. Since then, I’ve taken more initiative to be involved in more areas”.

The social aspect of Fitness Classes often keeps members coming back for more. Making new friends, and making memories at the Y, creates a community that’s diverse in backgrounds and perspectives. A community who will support you throughout your journey. The Volunteers who instruct the classes are the leaders and champions for all that the YMCA stands for, and proudly facilitate the friendships and fitness we love to see.

Our fitness classes are designed to offer something for everyone, spanning a range of interests, activities, and abilities. For more information about the fitness classes offered at the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth visit https://ymcahfx.ca/ymca-health-fitness/group-fitness/.
