Ron found community with YMCA Abilities in Motion
Ron Noel’s life changed abruptly in 2013 when he suffered a sudden stroke. After being discharged from rehabilitation, Ron committed himself to six weeks of outpatient physiotherapy. Recovery felt isolating at times, and Ron found himself searching for a sense of connection and purpose beyond the clinic.
That changed when a Dalhousie student volunteering at YMCA Abilities in Motion (AIM) told him about the program. Ron quickly found that at AIM it wasn’t just about the exercises, though those helped him continue building strength and confidence. It was the people, the conversations, and the shared understanding that made the difference.
They all had something in common: living with a disability. And in that shared experience, they built something meaningful together.
What Ron found was more than a program, it was a community. At AIM, people check in on each other, celebrate progress, and offer support during setbacks. If someone misses a class, it doesn’t go unnoticed; someone will reach out, making sure they’re okay.
For Ron, what once felt like a solitary struggle became a shared experience, filled with encouragement, belonging, and hope.
“If it weren’t for the YMCA, I likely wouldn’t be alive today. The YMCA saved my life.”
