Rediscovering Strength and Joy through the YMCA LiveWell Program

For years, Vicki Trainor’s life was marked by persistent back pain that limited her mobility, isolated her from the activities she once loved, and left her feeling disconnected. Living with chronic pain often means navigating a long road of physical and emotional challenges, but at 66, Vicki found an answer she hadn’t expected at the YMCA—a place where she could reclaim her strength and, just as importantly, a sense of belonging.

Vicki first heard about the YMCA’s LiveWell program through a fellow patient at the Pain Management Clinic. Hearing the woman describe the class as “inspiring,” and tailored for people facing chronic pain, Vicki felt a sense of hope. She reached out to the program coordinator and set up her first appointment. That moment marked the beginning of a journey that would help her not only strengthen her body but also rebuild confidence in her ability to move and thrive.

“From the first day in LiveWell, I knew this was what I had been needing for a long time,” Vicki explained. “Roisin, my instructor, made me feel safe to try new exercises without fear. She understood how chronic pain affects movement, and she gave me alternative options to work around my limitations.” With the support of Roisin and her class community, Vicki found that the exercises, while gentle, were exactly what her body needed to regain stability, functionality, and strength.

As Vicki’s muscles strengthened, so did her determination. Soon, she was adding cardio and weight training to her routine with the guidance of other YMCA staff. Vicki found herself gaining more than just physical capability; she found resilience and a renewed love for life. “My entire experience at the YMCA has provided me with the beautiful opportunity of remembering what I knew years ago—that joy is in the muscles! And age does not diminish that joy in the body, mind, and spirit.”

Vicki’s story is just one example of how the YMCA’s LiveWell program—like so many of the YMCA’s initiatives—ensures no person is left behind. For those dealing with chronic pain or health challenges, finding a supportive environment is often the missing piece in the journey to wellness. By supporting our No Person Left Behind campaign, you help make programs like LiveWell accessible to more individuals, giving them a pathway to resilience and community.

Help us continue to provide inclusive, supportive spaces by donating today to our No Person Left Behind campaign. Together, we can make wellness and community accessible to all.
