Inclusion at Our Childcare Centers

The foundation for an inclusive, accessible experience starts early in life. At our YMCA Childcare Centers, we strive to create environments where all children, regardless of ability, can learn, play, and grow together. Our Inclusion Program, spearheaded by our dedicated Inclusion Coordinators, provides tailored support to children with diverse needs, helping them reach developmental milestones and build strong foundations for the future.

One such story is that of Elijah Hawco, a remarkable young participant in our Inclusion Program at the Fall River Childcare Center. When Elijah first arrived, he had not yet begun walking—supported or unsupported—nor could he stand independently. With permission and excitement from his family, our team partnered with his physical therapist (PT) to help Elijah on his journey to greater independence.

“As parents, myself and my partner were a bit nervous for our son to start at the YMCA Childcare Center,” shared Elijah’s mother, Adelaide Hawco. “Like any other parent, the transition to daycare was filled with uncertainties, especially since Elijah was already behind in cognitive and motor skill milestones. But as the days went by, it was clear that Elijah was being supported and encouraged to both meet his peers’ levels while adapting activities to his specific needs and abilities.”

The PT visited the center and collaborated with our staff, sharing strategies and providing equipment, such as Elijah’s walker, to help him practice walking and building strength. The difference was soon evident. Alexandria Grandy, Inclusion Coordinator at Fall River Childcare Center, recalls a heartwarming moment during outdoor play when Elijah confidently followed his peers out to the playground, navigating the terrain with his walker.

“One day, as we headed outside, Elijah was determined to join the group,” Alexandria shared. “He maneuvered his walker right alongside his friends, and the smile on his face was unforgettable. He paused for just a moment, almost sizing it up, and then, with this amazing burst of determination, he took on that hill. It was one of those moments where everyone—kids and staff alike—were cheering him on.”

Alexandria notes that Elijah’s social confidence grew alongside his physical progress. “At first, Elijah liked to observe the other children from a distance, keeping to himself,” she explained. “We began placing some of his favorite toys closer to busier areas to encourage him to engage. Soon enough, he was joining in with the group, even starting small activities himself. Now, he’s right in there, playing and laughing with his friends.”

One of the most memorable milestones for Elijah’s transition to independent walking. “As parents, we accepted that the milestone wouldn’t match those of his peers, but the YMCA Childcare team started a meeting with Elijah’s external support team, and together, they came up with a plan,” his mother explained. “In short order Elijah was walking assisted at the same pace as his peers, and shortly after, he began walking unassisted before his third birthday! Proudest parent moment—and it couldn’t have happened without the support of the Inclusion Program.”

Through individualized support plans, sensory-friendly activities, and adaptive learning techniques, our Inclusion Program ensures that every child, like Elijah, has the tools they need to succeed. The dedication of our Inclusion Coordinators and educators—who work in close partnership with families, specialists, and external partners—makes this life-changing work possible.

“Collaborating with the YMCA team has been life-changing for Elijah and us,” said Adelaide. “Their efforts to support Elijah in meeting his milestones, especially walking, have boosted his independence, confidence, and overall health.”
